Did you listen to this in high school?

"But I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful
Like a rainbow"
Cyndi Lauper's True Colors (1984)

I love this song. Not only do I remember it from high school, but even today the lyrics resonate with me.

There’s such a pull to compare ourselves to others and to judge who’s better.

Whether it’s in how we look, how we parent, what our marriage looks like, or how we’re running a business, it’s all too easy to look at someone else and think that they have it all together.

And wonder, what’s wrong with me?

But, here’s the reality.

No matter how close you are to someone else, you don’t actually know what’s going on in their life and in their head.

The Bible tells us that we are wonderfully and fearfully made (Psalm 139). The God of the Universe created each one of us in a loving and powerful way. Even the parts of ourselves that we don’t like can be used to glorify God.

We each have “true colors that shine through.”

When you run a business, especially an online business, one other thing that your true colors do is bring your dream clients to you.

When you show up authentically, talking about what makes you “you” and sharing your own special brand of weirdness (whatever that is!), your dream clients are attracted to you.

For example, if you don’t think that expressing gratitude every day is a good idea, you’re going to quickly stop following me.

Because that’s something I talk a lot about.

I believe in it. In fact, just this morning in my daily gratitude writing, here’s my list:

God’s word
Kim Avery (the author of The Prayer Powered Entrepreneur)
Sara Anna Powers (one of my mentors)
Sarah (my biz bestie)
My family
My dogs - Harvey and Murphy
A warm house

And I could’ve kept going. I have so much to be grateful for. And staying focused on that helps me appreciate it all.

That’s part of my true colors.

And when I show up on social media, my Sunday Facebook post is ALWAYS a “Be Grateful” post. Every. Single. Week.

(I’m still working on a consistent presence on a couple of other channels but Facebook is very consistent!)

So, when someone is looking for a copywriter and they’ve seen me around the internet or they’ve been referred to me by someone else, when they look at my website or my profile, if the daily gratitude practice doesn’t resonate with them, they aren’t my dream client.

What does gratitude have to do with writing copy? Not much.

Except….for a big project, I often spend hours TALKING to a client. I want to work with people that I’d love to hang out with in real life.

And, even for a smaller project, I still spend hours diving into my client’s voice whether it’s directly on a call with them, listening to recorded content, reviewing current/old copy, etc.

I make sure that my client’s true colors shine through their copy so that their voice is heard and that their dream clients are attracted to their message.

And their dream clients hear their own thoughts written out on the page and think, “It’s like you were in my head.”

When you’re writing to your audience, let your true colors shine through, that’s how they’ll be attracted to your message.

And then you can offer them the transformation you have available.

If you’re tired of trying to get your true colors turned into words on the page, let's talk about how I can do it for you.
